Freeze Drying Ten Years Later
Ten years ago I made a video of a very rudimentary freeze dryer. That video was surprisingly popular, so I’m hoping this is the first of a series of videos covering topics such as how the freeze drying process works, the engineering of the machines, as well as modifications and improvements that can be made and the risks that may follow. Please comment on this video any questions you’d like to see addressed, that may include demonstrations and real world data.

How to spot a clone JLR DOIP

I was sold a counterfeit JLR interface by Autonumen, I ordered another JLR DOIP directly from Bosch and these are the differences I observed. The seller swore up and down the device was genuine. Order direct an...

One of these days I'll get an ion gauge to know what the vacuum level is, but a fingerprint only outgasses for about 20 minutes before drying due to the massive pumping capacity.

I was about 30 feet away and couldn't hit the can with the daisy so I moved up to about 10 feet, the Texan shots were about 30 feet away. The difference between the two is comical and I'm definitely going to be making some more comparison videos.

    As others have pointed out, this isn't freeze drying. You keep claiming that the low pressures causes the food to freeze but that's simply not true. Look at a water phase diagram, at room temps there is simply no way to freeze water regardless of how low the pressure goes. In true freeze drying the sample has to first be frozen so that the water is in a solid phase, then slowly warmed under a vacuum ensuring the water sublimates from solid directly to gas phase. What you're doing is going directly from a liquid to gas phase with the vacuum. Really cool but not freeze drying!

    I found something, i bought the Dell G3 17 with the i7 8750H and the GTX 1060 Q-Max.... At the beginning i was getting serious problems with thermal throttling in the CPU, from 3.9ghz was dropping to 1.4Ghz y every game even when the CPU was using only 25%, i replaced the thermal paste, it helps to stay more time in 3.9ghz but always dropping to 1.4ghz.... i reinstall windows but now without installing the "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" driver in the device manager, now my laptop is always running at 3.9ghz in every game no matter the temperature, i have to say that now the processor is running much hotter between 80-100c sometimes playing but I've see some laptops gamers playing at those temperatures without problem, so I don't know if should be worried or not, the i7 8750H can run at 105c so should be fine lol

    This may seem silly but could you try this with hot/warm boiling water in a copper pan and share the thickness of the copper pan, my theory is once working out the thermal conductivity using the thickness of a highly conductive metal and reducing the speed that the material radiates heat back into the water before freezing, this would employ the mpemba effect being that the more active molecules in the fluid would transfer and radiate heat out faster than cooler water. Also the hot water would hold less of the material to already boil one the vacuum is created, just a theory but cold water would hold more energy before the materials are removed/vaporised and it freezes. If hot water does work would it almost eliminate the boiling phase and if so by how much does it radiate the heat back out in a vacuum and onto the areas around it with the conducive characteristics in a copper pan?

    • @ANATURALDREWSASTER
      @ANATURALDREWSASTER 3 года назад

      Well assuming you can trap or pump the vapor away fast enough, heat speeds up the water leaving the food. The sublimation occurs because of the vacuum level, not the temperature. As long as you have sufficient vacuum, you can introduce heat. Some commercial freeze dryers even use microwaves to speed up the process!

    • @trevorfichtner3539
      @trevorfichtner3539 3 года назад

      @@ANATURALDREWSASTER so does that mean, ice on a lake for example cannot evaporate from solid to gas immediately? It has to first melt to water? At what vaccum pressure level does sublimation occur?

    • @ANATURALDREWSASTER
      @ANATURALDREWSASTER 3 года назад

      @@trevorfichtner3539 ok so here it gets complicated, sublimation can occur at atmospheric pressure like how ice cubes get smaller in the freezer and food can dry out in the freezer, it's just very slow because you can't add heat due to no vacuum. Vacuum let's you speed everything up because it pretty much makes it so that the water only sublimates with no melting. I'd recommend reading about something called the "triple point" of water. It explains what you're asking about.

Who cares if WE are ok with the power bill (fyi my r900 is my house furnace in the winter and keeps the house steady at 73F with no spikes like a furnace does for 1/4 the cost). • @ANATURALDREWSASTER

      A standard refrigerator does not get cold enough to trap vapors. The cold trap prevents contamination of the oil as well as providing a higher effective pumping speed, and it also increases the efficiency of the system by allowing the vacuum pump to maintain a higher level of vacuum.
